The East of England has a strong track record of delivering huge economic benefit to
the country including:
• In 2019 the East of England was one of the fastest growing regions in the UK, in
terms of both population size and economy.1
• Investment in research and development within the region's business sector was
at the second highest level of any region in the UK, greater even than London.
• In 2019 and 2020, the East of England was one of only three UK regions to
contribute more to the Exchequer than it was receiving in public money.
• World-class life-science super clusters, the largest concentration of air and
seaports and offshore windfarms in the UK, delivering over half of the nation's
wind energy.
• A crucial gateway and entry point for the goods entering the UK, with Felixstowe
Port alone handling 70% of the UK's container freight , and London Stansted
Airport, current the UK's third largest cargo airport and the only airport with
capacity to support increased demand over the next 10-15 years.2
